You understand and be understood better if you take the time to learn local dialects. A tutor can also teach you the informal understanding of words in local dialects. A book or CD will normally teach the formal usage of language. However, you can learn slang from a tutor.

Enroll in a course. Some people are uncomfortable to learn Spanish with other people. It's common to have to speak the language outloud in front of the whole class. Many people feel this is intimidating.

However, it is highly recommended to try and do it no matter what mistakes you make. Everyone else makes the same mistakes, so what better time or place is there to do it? You can all make the same mistakes together. That's much better than doing it in real life where you people may be less forgiving of your mistakes.

There's no reason that speaking another language has to be hard or complicated. As far as languages go, Spanish is certainly not considered to be the most difficult. Just take a step by step approach to learning Spanish and one day you will find that you are speaking and understanding it fluently!
