It's always a great idea to learn a second language. English and Spanish are almost equally spoken in the US. How many times a day do you hear something in English translated into Spanish? One theory about learning languages is the the best solution is immersion in the new language. If you were trying to learn Spanish, for example, you would visit somewhere in which Spanish was the primary language. If you live in a big city this might be an area of your own city. Traveling to another land will be a more effective immersion strategy, however, as it takes away the possibility of being able to lapse back into speaking your familiar language. Many people swear by the immersion method--they say it forced them to learn faster. Of course, this way of learning a language can also be somewhat stressful. It's a matter of personal preference.

Be sure to work on your listening skills for any language. A lot of languages tend to be more 'oral' than written. In fact, as long as the language is still "alive" you will have to learn how to hear the language. Knowing how to correctly write a sentence or the alphabet will produce limited results. You need to be able to understand the language when you hear it. The best approach is to listen to the language as much as you can. When you're able to positively identify the language after hearing a few words spoken, then that's a sure sign you're well on your way to learning it.
